In 2006, Aaron was awarded a McKnight Foundation Fellowship for the compositions on his solo debut album, Arco 71. From there, he took inspiration from his new instrument, an electric cello, to compose an original set of music exploring the crossover of classical music and jazz. With the release of his second album in 2009—and following a feature on NPR's Science Friday program—Aaron took his new set on the road, and Aaron Kerr's Dissonant Creatures was born.

Aaron Kerr's Dissonant Creatures' lineup includes Brett Hansen (guitar), Jonathan Townsend (drums), Chris Andresen (bass), Mike Nordby (mandolin and percussion), Jeff Crandall (guitar and piano), and Sean Egan (clarinet and piano.) Together, Aaron and his ensemble perform at festivals and tour throughout the Midwest.
